John D. Rockefeller was the richest Christian EVER! Most people don’t know that but according to biographer he was deeply entrenched in Church life:
While still in his teens, he became a Sunday-school teacher, a trustee, and an unpaid clerk who kept the board minutes in his own hand. Free of false pride, he delighted even in menial chores, and one woman in the congregation left this vivid vignette of his ubiquitous presence:
‘In those years … Rockefeller might have been found there any Sunday sweeping out the halls, building a fire, lighting the lamps, cleaning the walks, ushering the people to their seats, studying the bible, praying, singing, performing all the duties of an unselfish and thorough going church member.… He was nothing but a clerk, and had little money, and yet he gave something to every organization in the little, old church. He was always very precise about it. If he said that he would give fifteen cents, not a living soul could move him to give a penny more, or a penny less.… He studied his Bible regularly and diligently, and he knew what was in it.’
He is known as the 3rd richest person of all time!
And the reason is that he learned the lesson of creating wealth. He wanted to be the master of money– not its servant.
By the time he was 12 he had saved $50, about $1400 in today’s money. He then loaned a farmer the $50 at 7% interest. At the end of the year he collected $3.50 with absolutely no work. He later said,
Rockefeller was a hard worker. When he worked as a bookkeeper he would sometimes put in 12 hour days. But even while he was an ordinary laborer he would trade his own money in different futures and commodities. He was always looking for ways to create wealth.
He wanted his money to work.
What Does Jesus Say About Creating Wealth
The Bible itself has to say about prosperity. But what does Jesus say?
Jesus spoke a lot about stewardship. But when He spoke about good stewardship it wasn’t just about handling money…it was about multiplying money:
For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods. And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey. Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents. And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two. But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord’s money.”Matthew 25:14-18 KJV
Another translation says verse 16 like this:
The servant who had received five talents went and put them to work, and gained five more.”Matthew 26:16 (Berean Bible Study)
Jesus also said:
And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, ‘Occupy till I come.’Luke 19:13 (KJV)
That Greek word “occupy” is the Greek word “diapragmateuomai” (pronounced dee-ap-rag-mat-yoo’-om-ahee). It has different meanings:
- “Gain by business trading.”
- “Busily engaged in making trades.”
- “Increase by trading.”
It implies active, detailed trading that “buys right” and then knows just when to exchange.
So in other words:
- “Gain by business trading” till I come.
- “Be busily engaged in making trades” till I come.
- “Increase by trading” till I come.
- “Do business” till I come.
What Does This Have to Do With You
The truth is: creating wealth is Godly work. And even though this is not for everyone I am speaking to YOU. We need you to draw the wisdom God has given you, to learn from the examples He has put forth, and to create wealth that will benefit those around you.
How you do it is up to you?
That being said we need you Godly wealth creators. We need your vision. We need your skills. We need you to teach us. And we need your philanthropy.
Regardless or what the world says or even what the church says. WE. NEED. YOU!
